THE CLIENT
Suffolk County Retirement Home and Assisted Living Facility
A need for a Membrane Bioreactor (MBR) System
In 2015, Newterra partnered with an engineering firm to retrofit and expand an aging wastewater treatment plant (WWTP) at a retirement home and assisted living facility in Suffolk County, New York. The existing extended aeration system was outdated, inefficient, and no longer met environmental compliance requirements. With the facility expanding, a solution was needed to increase capacity while remaining within the site’s existing footprint.
CHALLENGE
The facility’s outdated aeration system wasn’t meeting new capacity needs
The facility’s existing treatment system was failing, struggling to meet modern environmental standards, and posed operational risks for their expanding services. With a limited footprint at the site, it was essential to find a solution that would maximize capacity without expanding beyond the available space.
SOLUTION
Newterra’s MBR solution was selected for its simplicity and its high-effluent quality
We upgraded the system to membrane bioreactor (MBR) technology, which provided several key benefits: superior effluent quality, increased flow capacity, and a compact design ideal for the restricted site. Two new treatment trains were added to increase capacity, while the original in-ground concrete tanks were repurposed for equalization and sludge storage, optimizing resources and reducing costs.
SERVICE MAKES THE DIFFERENCE
The plant now accommodates the facility’s growing wastewater flow.

The detailed design and construction began in 2020, leading to a successful retrofit that incorporated the existing infrastructure. The upgraded plant now meets modern environmental standards and operates efficiently to support the facility’s needs.
The upgraded sewage treatment plant significantly enhanced the facility’s operations. With the MBR system in place, the plant delivers higher-quality effluent, meets regulatory requirements, and handles increased flow to accommodate the expanding retirement home and assisted living services.
The project has enabled the continuation and growth of these vital services, ensuring the facility’s ability to meet the demands of its growing population while protecting the environment.
