Ozone Remediation System

CHALLENGE

Following the removal of one gasoline and two diesel underground storage tanks (USTs), residual petroleum hydrocarbons and BTEX compounds were identified in both soil and groundwater at a site in Limestone County, Alabama. The Alabama Department of Environmental Management (ADEM) required immediate investigative and corrective actions. PPM Consultants, Inc. was engaged by the property owner to develop a corrective action plan that could effectively remediate the impacted clay-rich subsurface conditions.

SOLUTION

Newterra was selected to provide a proven in-situ remediation technology tailored to the site’s tight, moist clay and silty clay lithology. After site evaluation and system sizing, Newterra recommended the OSU20-52 ozone injection cabinet equipped with Intelo-Zone™ automation. The system included 10 in-situ oxidation wells, each with an estimated 10-foot radius of influence, to target and oxidize BTEX and petroleum hydrocarbons directly within the subsurface.

By integrating these components into the site, Newterra created a reliable treatment train that met regulatory needs while minimizing operational impact.

RESULTS

Ozone sparging began, and ongoing monitoring confirmed a significant reduction in BTEX concentrations. Data from Monitoring Well 8 showed a steady decline in contaminant levels throughout the injection period, following initial background fluctuations.

The site was officially closed, validating the effectiveness of Newterra’s in-situ ozone solution
